Death trooper Fathead

Imperial Death Troopers were an elite force of Imperial Stormtroopers used by the Galactic Empire. They wore black armor and were not to mixed up with the similar Shadow Trooper. They were known to serve under high-ranking Imperial officers such as Grand Admiral Thrawn, Governor Pryce and Baron Rudor or later during the early Galactic Civil War under members of the Tarkin Initiative like Governor Tarkin and Director Krennic.

History[]

Early History and Background[]

Death Troopers were picked from the most elite Stormtrooper units in the Imperial Army who underwent elite training and later received classified medical enhancements to become the "perfect stormtrooper". Imperial Death Troopers gained their name due to a Imperial bioweapons project that went wrong, possibly something similar to the Dandoran Breakout.

Early usage[]

Pryce's squad

Arihnda Pryce's squad of Death Troopers

During the Rebellion against the Galactic Empire, Grand Admiral Thrawn had his personal Death Trooper squad to aid his attempts against the growing rebel movement. Two of these Death Troopers accompanied the Chiss Imperial to Lothal where they managed to capture Imperial traitor Agent Alexsandr Kallus, who was attempting to tell the rebels known as the Spectres of Thrawn's plans. Thrawn using the data from the communication deduced the location of the rebel base was on the planet of Atollon, and sent the Seventh Fleet, his legions of Stormtroopers and Death Troopers and walkers including All Terrain Armored Transports and AT-DP walkers. While Governor Arihnda Pryce led the orbital attack and space battle, Thrawn travelled to the surface with six of his Death Troopers and trapped the fleeing Spectres, however due to Bendu's intervention, the rebels escaped Thrawn's grip.

A short while later, DT-F16 and her Death Troopers were tasked with bringing a massive kyber crystal for the Death Star project by Director Krennic and were to meet with Captain Slavin at specified coordinates. However the squad was defeated by the Spectres and leader of the Partisans Saw Gerrera who destroyed the crystal killing all those aboard the cargo freighter. When the Spectres returned to Lothal to help Ryder Azadi and his group of insurgents in dealing with the Empire, they accidentally draw the attention of Imperial Baron and TIE pilot Valen Rudor who sent his Death Trooper assistant DT-L21 and his Stormtrooper squadmates to kill them. DT-L21 and his squadmates failed however due to the rebels being helped to get out of the secret tunnel sewer network by Azadi. Two members of the Thrawn's squad (possibly the same 2 that helped the Grand Admiral capture Kallus) followed Thrawn and Pryce to Lothal in order to test Vult Skerris's new TIE/D Defender Elite prototype, however the craft was stolen by the Spectres and not wanting the Rebel Alliance to use such powerful ships, Pryce remotely cut off it's wings thus crashing the TIE. Death Troopers then assisted Governor Pryce and Rukh in pursuing Hera Syndulla when Jedi Knight Kanan Jarrus rescued her from the Imperial complex. The troopers were able to catch to Jarrus and Syndulla.

Additionally, Death Troopers were with Minister Veris Hydan at Lothal's Jedi temple, where the Empire was excavating it. They helped Hydan interrogate Sabine Wren, until Garazeb Orrelios reduced Wren, allowing her to knock out one of the troopers. Death Troopers were stationed at the Imperial Complex. With Rukh, the Death Troopers fought the rebels and attempted to stop them from reactivating the shields. However, they were all defeated by Orrelios. The remaining troopers of Thrawn's guard were with him aboard the Chimaera and were taken out by Ezra Bridger before the ship was taken by a Purgil to an unknown location.

Death Trooper (Tarkin Initiative) and Galactic Civil War[]

During the early Galactic Civil War, members of the Tarkin Initiative used a variant of the Death Trooper. During the Death Star's early stages of construction, several Death Troopers accompanied Moff Wilhuff Tarkin to Scarif to confront Darth Vader's intrusion in the data vault. After this, Palpatine tasked Vader to investigate several sabotage attempts on the Death Star's construction.

After arriving on Geonosis, Commander Orson Callan Krennic greeted Vader on a landing pad with a number of Death Troopers. Suddenly an assassination attempt was made on Krennic and Vader, as an explosion sent a pile of rocks crashing down on them, cruising several Death Troopers. Although this happened, Vader investigated, and learned the sabotage was orchestrated by a rogue Geonosian queen. Vader brought several Death Troopers to help confront the Queen in the Korkanni Mound, killing the saboteurs, including the Queen.

Director Orson Krennic also had a personal squad of Death Troopers that killed Lyra Erso and captured her husband Galen Erso. The same squad was present alongside Krennic and Initiative leader Governor Wilhuff Tarkin when the Death Star destroyed NiJedha. Krennic and his Death Troopers went to the planet of Eadu, where at his command they killed all Death Star scientists but Galen. Krennic's squad was force to retreat in a Delta-class T-3c shuttle due to a surprise attack by rebel X-Wing Starfighters. After Krennic met with his master Lord Vader in the latter's castle on Mustafar, where the Imperial Lord ordered Krennic to ensure the rebels' failure, the Director and his bodyguards went to the tropical planet of Scarif, where the plans for the Death Star were stored. Soon after Krennic arrived, a huge battle on the beaches of Scarif erupted between members of the Rebel Alliance and the local Stormtroopers, Shoretroopers and Death Troopers. At the orders of Director Krennic, all of the legions and walkers at the base tried to eliminate the rebel threat. Krennic's guard squadron was among the Imperial troops sent to fend of the insurgents, but the whole squad was killed by rebel and Guardian of the Whills Baze Malbus.

In the aftermath of the Battle of Yavin, Death Troopers served on the Tarkin Initiative space station, Hivebase-1. They served under Commander Yewl. Yewl's troopers fought Aphra's crew, who had a prisoner, Hera Syndulla. All the troopers died when the base was destroyed.

Several Death Troopers accompanied Lieutenant-Inspector Magna Tolvan on Coruscant.

After the Empire[]

The Mandalorian Chapter Seven Stills 05

A squad of death troopers served as part of Gideon's Imperial remnant.

Approximately nine years after the Battle of Yavin, a squad of death troopers served in an Imperial remnant led by Moff Gideon. The troopers opened fire on a cantina on Nevarro, killing "the Client" and several stormtroopers. Gideon's forces engaged Din Djarin, Cara Dune, Greef Karga after they fought their way out of the cantina, and a fierce battle ensued, with two death troopers resorting to hand-to-hand combat after they were disarmed. several death troopers circled around to breach the cantina, and attempted to flush Cara Dune out with saturated blaster fire, but were defeated. Afterwards, the remaining death troopers escorted Gideon, as he gave the order to "burn out" Djarin, Dune, and Karga.

Legacy[]

During the Cold war between the Resistance and the First Order, Agent Terex had possession of a Death Trooper helmet, and kept it on display aboard the Carrion Spike, next to the helmets of a Royal Guard, an AT-AT pilot, and an Imperial Shoretrooper.

The helmet of Trudgen, a Knight of Ren, contained a section of a death trooper helmet, indicating that he had defeated one at some point in time.
