A Sith Empire was a government created and run by members of the Sith Order.

At various points following the creation of their order during or after the Hundred-Year Darkness, the Sith created entire empires using the powers they gained by studying the Dark Side of the Force. Without exception, these empires were built with the extensive use of slave labor. The Jedi Order opposed these regimes, and the Jedi and Sith waged war against the other. During these conflicts, the Sith would employ superweapons that utilized kyber crystals.

Sith worlds that were strong with the Dark Side had shrines built on them to channel the power of the Sith. These worlds were usually located far from Coruscant, but around 6000 years before the Battle of Yavin, they managed to build a shrine here as well. This shrine was eventually sealed by the Jedi a thousand years later.

At least one of the Sith governments managed to take control over the entire known galaxy at one point. Despite this triumph, the Order fell into infighting and eventually collapsed around 1000 years before the Battle of Yavin, leaving only one survivor.

During the Clone Wars, The Sith Lords collaborated with the resurgent Zygerrian Slave Empire. Count Dooku was sent to Zygerria by Darth Sidious to enforce his will on the Zygerrians and get their queen to cooperate. Sidious reminded Dooku of the importance slavery held for the ancient Sith empires and that their re-institution would be vital to the new empire the two were building.

At the end of the Clone Wars, Mace Windu fought Supreme Chancellor Palpatine after the latter was exposed as being Darth Sidious. At the climax of the duel, Windu had the upper hand. He made a promise that the oppression of the Sith would never return and attempted to kill Sidious, but was interrupted by Anakin Skywalker and lost his hand. Sidious unleashed deadly Force lightning on the injured Jedi Master and sent him plummeting to his death. In the aftermath of the duel, the Sith Master then declared to Skywalker, now his new apprentice, that the Sith would once more rule the galaxy.

The Supreme Chancellor then moved swiftly to brand all Jedi as "traitors", ordering their immediate execution. He made Skywalker, now dubbed Darth Vader, participate in the purging by attacking the Jedi Temple on Coruscant. Sidious went on to transform the Galactic Republic into the Galactic Empire, a new Sith empire in all but name. Among other ancient Sith traditions, the practice of slavery was re-instituted to aid his Empire's growth. Sidious also excavated the ancient Sith shrine located deep underneath the Jedi Temple and made the temple itself his Imperial palace.
